Boiler display blank

Boiler was working perfectly fine just prior to a power cut. (Boiler was actually on and its a combi glowworm)
Power restored and now boiler completely blank.
Glowworm suggested over the phone it could be PCB. Local boiler guy refused to give an idea of price over the phone. Glowworm do a fixed price repair for £286. Does this seem a better bet for PCB replacement? Is there anything else it could be that would be a simple fix? Tia

It could just be the fuse on the pcb board

Could be the fuse in the power supply isolating switch near your boiler. Could be the fuse on the PCB as said above (more tricky to get to). Could be a completely blown PCB.
Oh, and it could - I guess - be something else...
What sort of room stat do you have? Does it have a display or even a red indicator? Is it mains operated? Is it working?
  • sounds like the pcb board. But does the boiler still function, if not it may be the supply from mains which should be a fused switch. If does work then the display board has blown. A new board varies in price from £100 to £200 depending on model but maybe the board could be repaired.
  • The boiler is completely dead.. Absolutely no power in it at all. Nothing on the display at all on the boiler but the programmer is working fine. That is showing a display as normal. Seems like when the power was restored there was a surge and it's blown something..
  • Some household insurance policies cover damage to appliances caused by a power cut/surge. Mine did and replaced the article.

Is the programmer battery-powered? If so, that could explain the display.
Try turning the isolator off that supplies the boiler (and everything else to do with your CH system). Does the prog now go off? If so, that shows the isolator fuse is ok, so the fault is almost certainly within the boiler - an internal fuse (they do have them) or a blown component.
PCBs are typically around the £200-mark, and replacing one would take at least one hour, quite possibly more as it would need setting up (adjusting fuel mixes, fan speeds, that malarkey), so I think your best bet would be a Fixed Price Repair by GlowWorm/Vaillant. That should come in at under £300, and they also tend to replace any other dodgy-looking parts they find.
Or, consider your house insurance, but bear in mind you'll almost certainly have a £250 excess at the very least!

  • check the supply is there. The power supply should come from a fused switch. check the fuse (or just replace it) if that doesn't work you need a engineer. but as mentioned check your house insurance.

Worth trying to claim against your DNO: there may have been other incidents at the same time if it was an area issue.

If its a Gloworm 30cxi or similar almost inevitably the PCD, had a few now in the last 10 years, blow far too often.
