Retrofitting Underfloor heating

  • I used the polypipe overlay system for my kitchen, which uses 18mm routed boards and looks very similar in principle to the prowarm.  I put a thin layer of insulation below and hardiebacker on top so the total increase in height was 30mm, before 10mm of slate tiles.  In retrospect I probably didn't need the tile backing board, but the step from the hallway is small enough not to be noticeable.

I also installed a vertical radiator due to lacking confidence in my own calculations on whether or not the UFH would be sufficient, but it turned out not to be needed to maintain a comfortable temperature.  Still nice when it's -6C outside though as I can whack up the TRV and toast myself next to it when I come in from the cold.

OP, you haven't told us what sort of floor you have? Tiled doesn't mean it's solid.

So you'll need to screed it and fit the UFH into that?

There would need to be insulation installed between the concrete and screed.
