Glazed sections will reduce the insulation properties but won't negate them completely.  We were always able to use our conservatory in winter with underfloor heating. In fact my brother-in-law heads straight out there when they come to visit.
  • Ours is open plan. Kitchen through conservatory,  and is Used all year round. We have radiators fitted along the front facing windows.  Advised against velux windows because of heat loss and most people who had had them fitted, regretted it afterwards. I was all for a new extension but suffered a heart attack and we decided to go down this avenue.
I painted the ceiling white and lime washed the new oak tie beams.

This conversation has made a massive difference in temperature changes,  all for the better.

The roof would be the major source of heat loss if it's glass, but having had 3 Velux in my old house I'm doubtful a couple of those would have a massive adverse effect in an insulated roof..
We don't have an extreme climate in the West Country, but when we had harsh weather a few years ago and -6c outside, I worked in our glass roofed conservatory all day at around 19c with only the 5Kw wood burner in the adjoining room heating it. It was a fairly harsh test and it surprised me in a good way because I'd expected to put an electric radiator on in there.
We're fortunate having access to cheap or free wood and in being at home to use the conservatory in day time. Maybe if we had to be there during the hours of darkness our thinking would be different, but in that event we'd have gone for a traditionally roofed garden room of relatively small size to compensate for the higher cost.
