Mask wearing is 'a condition of carriage' on TfL. They can remove you, or bar you from entering the network for non-compliance, but there are no legal sanctions or fines possible. As such, it's widely ignored.

I keep thinking I should just buy a bloody push bike instead (my commute is 5 miles each way), but the thought of cycling on the roads terrifies me. It may however reduce the pressure to get a second car until we have more information.

An electric bike would make a 5 mile commute pretty effortless. It may be daunting at first but you'd likely enjoy it once you get confident with it.

Though at 5 miles I'd also be just looking at getting a bus/train rather than buying another car.
Easy and cheap but also potentially quite unsafe, depending on where you live. I would never get one round here, it's suicide.

Public transport is a no go unfortunately. If I was lucky, and both buses were on time, it'd be an hour including 2.5 miles of walking. The train is even worse and husband's options aren't much better. There is a chance one of his new colleagues could be willing/able to car share - I've never been able to find anybody at my company who it would suit.

Having considered electric bikes/mopeds they don't solve enough of the issues to warrant the expense. I appreciate running/maintenance costs are less than a car, but they won't give me many options when hubby is working shifts come spring. The appeal of the push bike is that one could easily be had for under £100 on FB - that's about the only pro on the list if I'm honest!

We've agreed that, as I only have two confirmed office trips this year, one of us will taxi it if we can't make it work with one car. At some point we'll bite the bullet and buy that second car, but hopefully we'll know more about his commute before doing that, or we'll have seen something too good to pass up.

I used to commute 5 miles to work on a bike. It's a nice distance. Gives you 10 episodes of exercise if you work 5 days a week. It was twice as fast as a car for me. Often it's all about finding a safe route that may not be the most direct. Sometimes paths exist that car drivers don't know exist. Have a look on google maps and see if you can find a route that may be safer than the most direct. 5 miles is only 20 minutes. You don't get held up in traffic on a bike.

A Japanese car like Honda accord, Civic will save fuel for you, with a set of Turanza QuietTrack tires that increase the quietness and comfort of the vehicle, as mentioned in this article https://tireer.com/best-tires-for-honda-accord/
