How do I get my ds to use a spoon?

I don't understand how there can be a left or right handed spoon. Never realised there was a type that bent.
Don't worry about it. I have a 4 year old who could feed himself at 7 months but who uses his fingers to eat AND takes sandwiches apart to lick off the filling before eating them. Urgh. I don't care as long as he has otherwise good table manners. He's not allowed to do the licky thing when we're eating anywhere but home but if he uses his fingers I don't really care. It's not a big deal for now. Plenty of other things to keep on top of - I try not to sweat the small stuff!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
lol my youngest is 11 and he still uses his hands to eat. As long as he is eating healthily he could use his feet for me.0

Neither did I until I needed them! I always used the angled spoons as they were easier for the kids to get into their mouths, but look closely and they are all designed to be held in the right hand.
DS couldn't use a straight spoon at the time so we had to find a solution.
I should start manufacturing my own haha
Ive had a look and you cant seem to buy them as easily now as you could 14 years ago, but these are similar (although designed for right handed use). they make self feeding a heck of a lot easier...

They do a left-handed corkscrew if your 15 yo still has problems using rh equipment! :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Wow!! Now why didnt they do those 14 years ago! :rotfl:We bent more spoons than Uri Geller in this house!!
He adapts to normal things now, although if I could find a left handed dish mop, left handed duster and a left handed vacuum cleaner I'd buy him those :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
I only found that site because I was needing ideas for DS2's 18th: for DS1 people could buy him 'household' stuff because he was planning on going to Uni and his birthday is in July, but DS1's birthday is December so a long while to have stuff cluttering up the house, plus his first choices would mean him not needing to cook.
Anyway I suggested someone get him a tin-opener, which is small and useful in almost any situation, and then I realised that I wasn't sure which of ours he used: I thought one of them was ambidextrous but it's not. Turns out he's using a RH one and adapting OK, as long as it's a 'good' one and not a nasty cheap thing, but I can't use nasty cheap tin-openers either.
Apparently the LH corkscrew is a good laugh watching RH people try to use it! :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi.
For info: my partner's 10yr old daughter won't use a knife unless ABSOLUTELY necessary; will use fingers WHEREVER possible. Apparently, I found out - it is 'uncool' to use cutlery these days.0 -
I have to confess I do pick at thing with my fingers, bad example I know but I resist the urge to shovel in a mouthful of mash with my palms

Sue, I dont think Ive ever bought him anything specifically left handed, just the spoons. he sounds like your son, just adapts. That said I did spend a lot of money on a left handed electric guitar for him last xmas, only for him to discover he could play easier right handed.......
What was the saying about only left handed people being in their right minds lol0 -
my DSis 3 and will still do this so i wouldn't worry he likes to do it when eating yoghurt so a few mouthfulls with the spoon then he digs 3 of his fingers into the pot and scoops the yoghurt out......the more i discourage it the more he likes to do it.Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
