Negotiate cost and remedy known faults, prior to purchase?
Sorry for the long title.
I have recently paid for a pre-purchase vehicle inspection (used vehicle, 9 years old) and the results weren't too bad. Just air con not working and one bald tyre. I am not sure how to proceed.
Do I pay a deposit on the understanding that the Aircon is regarded and a new tyre fitted?
Do I not pay in full and ask dealer to remedy?
Do I not pay a thing and ask dealer to remedy?
Do I take the car at a negotiated cost to remedy myself?
I hope this makes sense and appreciate any responses.
Many thanks in advance.

Aircon can be tricky and expensive to fix if it's not just a regas. Obviously the bald tyre will be cheap to remedy, although I guess the car doesn't have 12 months MOT if they picked this up.
If it's from a trader I'd ask them to remedy before sale, if a private sale I'd knock down the offer a bit.Pensions actuary, Runner, Dog parent, Homeowner1 -
Oddly enough the MOT runs until September '22.biscan25 said:Aircon can be tricky and expensive to fix if it's not just a regas. Obviously the bald tyre will be cheap to remedy, although I guess the car doesn't have 12 months MOT if they picked this up.

It's a private dealer. I'm not sure if I should be paying a deposit and then asking them to remedy0 -
Ok, private sale, 3 options then:
1. As you suggest, ask seller to fix, probably the best option, although I'm not sure I'd be comfortable letting a private seller hold a deposit unless you know where he lives (ask for drivers license etc.)
2. Knock offer down and fix. Accept that the aircon fix could potentially be more than you reduced offer by.

Sorry, I don't know why I wrote private dealer. It's just a dealer/ trader/ used car showroom.
But I very much appreciate your advice. Thank you.0 -
Non-working air-con is never "just a regas"The reason it needs a regas is because the gas leaked out through a hole somewhere expensive to fix.If it only needed a £20 regas, it would be working....I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Get it fixed and confirm it before parting with any money.
Once you've handed over the money, you'll have an almost impossible job to get anything fixed.

Walk away is what i would do .

If you buy this car, you have to accept the air con is not working and will never work on the car. You may wish to negotiate the price down to reflect that - you may then get lucky if you can fix it for "just a regass". If the Dealer is not agreeable to that approach, the Dealer can fix before purchase, plus warranty the aircon.
The bald tyre is a more simple Dealer fixes, or you get a discount. If the Dealer fits a new tyre, it will likely be the cheapest going. The Dealer may suggest the window price reflects the condition of the tyre. If you don't want the cheapest tyre fitted, a discount and get your own tyre may be better.
I'd also question any car from a Dealer offered with a bald tyre needing replacement - such an easy thing to get correct it makes you wonder what else that Dealer "overlooked". Are there any other 9yo used vehicles for sale at the moment?5
