yes it is possible to even leave the same beads in . 28mm double will be 4/20/4 with the 20mm being the airspace . You can replace that with 4/8/4/8/4 and my preferred 6.4 lami outside /6/4/6/4 . if its possible to replace your beads to make the unit 34mm you can gain in both spacer bars being thicker . diferent thickness glass helps noise ( and thermal values ) lami outside improves security take into account you may still require toughened inside if the spec supports it B.S-6262 toughened glass at risk levels2 -
Our house is also about 20 years old and we had new double glazing about 12 years ago. Just the other day I chatted with the guys who did the replacement re our possible replacing just the double-glazing panes with triple-glazing. Their advice was clear: replacing our current panes with new ones doesn't make any sense because the new panes have to have the same thickness as the existing ones (so as to fit the frames) and they would definitely be worse thermally though they said that there might be small gain re sound proofing.
And even replacing the frames so that we could have thicker triple-glazed panes would, according to them, not be cost-effective as there would be only a relatively small gain in thermal isolation. (Refreshing that there are still salesmen who'll give you honest advice.)
