Probably a silly question, but are you sure they gave you back your ring and not another?

I only ask because I cannot see how or even why a jeweller would 'sand off' or otherwise remove branding from the inside of a ring when re-sizing it.

Normally jewellers resize by gently stretching the ring. This might slightly distort writing but not remove it

Did they re-size by replacing the actual band with a band in a larger size - this would explaing the missing branding

You could take it to another jeweller for a professional opinion on the work and an estimate to fix it. Then go back to the original shop and ask them to pay.

OP said the ring had previously been stretched by Ernest Jones.

We don't know what the ring is made of. Gold is quite malleable and easy to stretch. Tungsten not so much.

In terms of consumer rights we do need to know what the invoice actually says.

    What brand was it?

Branding adds exceptionally little value to modern/contemporary jewellery unless we are talking a Cartier... even the likes of Tiffany only have a modest markup in comparison to an unbranded item of similar quality.

Enlarging a ring generally involves stretching it over a former unless its a large chance or its already been stretched in the past. The consequence, even if done well, is anything engraved on the inside will be distorted. You can try and limit this by targetting some areas but then inevitably you get uneven band and decorations etc may become unaligned.
Hearts on Fire would be the most likely - they engrave H F inside their rings with a tiny diamond inbetween the letters. Mainly sold through Beaverbrooks in the UK with a price point to match.

Would sound likely then and certainly wouldnt add any value on the resale market.
  • Hi all, thanks for your comments.

@Bradden whilst another jeweller would never be able to put the branding back in, they may be able to repair the other issues that he has done to the ring. Including a recoat of the white gold and repair the band that isn’t even in places.

@a@Alderbank correct, the invoice just says to resize the ring. However my main aim now isn’t to go to court to cause havoc, it’s to try and repair my ring as much as possible to how it was previously when I was given it by my now husband. There are several other issues to the ring that has happened from bad workmanship and so ideal would be that the jeweller pays for these errors to another jeweller who can fix them. I don’t care about the value of the ring, I care that it doesn’t look anything like the ring that my husband purchased because of the issues.

  • @cx6 yes it is my ring, the brand is called Leo and the brand is meant to say The Leo on the inside of the ring with the o being a diamond and the diamond is still there. This was my belief of the way that they do it too but he said he had to sand it, it was only when he saw the diamond did he realise it was there.

@68ComebackSpecial  the brand is Leo Diamond and it is 18ct white gold

  • Just some pictures to explain a few of the other issues. Where the ring band has been stretched, the band is now too thin so the diamond can be seen coming out the side of the band rather than the diamond being in the middle of the band neatly.

The second picture shows where he has stretched the band and where the last hole is stretched. This holds a diamond so to me I would like that being fixed to ensure the diamond doesn’t fall out.

If the band is stretched, it will stretch more at the weaker points i.e. where the metal is thinnest, at the holes.  I don't understand how the OP thinks this can be avoided.  As it had been stretched previously there would already be distortion although possibly not enough to be obvious to the naked eye.  The diamond could be glued in to ensure it remains in place.
How many sizes has the ring been resized by?
  • @TELLIT01 I don’t work in a jewellery repair shop so how would I know what happens when a ring is resized? I’ve had it resized at Ernest Jones when I was given the ring as it was the wrong size and nothing was changed in the ring apart from the size. It looked exactly as I sent it in bar the size difference and so I thought that would be the case again. Showing Ernest Jones the photos of the ring now they have said it is not to the standard that they would have repaired it.
