18 year old unable to get current account

  • Looking at the electoral role, it looks like they missed him off, so we have added this now.  He doesnt have a tax code letter as he has only worked since May.  He is training to be a chef and had no work due to covid.
  • Also I have pointed out to HSBC that we have a joint account, his sister has a current account and his grandparents have a joint account all at the same branch and this has made no difference.

Another document might be acceptable to many banks is the NINO confirmation

That seems to make no difference with NatWest either - both Marley and I have had personal current accounts with them for 20+ years but, to open a joint account, they want to see ID for both of us.

I don't know what a 'Thierry letter' is, but you (he) can webchat or phone HMRC and ask them to send you a tax coding notice. That's definitely dated and accepted as a proof of ID by many organisations.  As somone with no driving licence or passport it's a standard 'go to' for me - I make sure I get one every year and as I said before, HMRC are used to them being requested as a from of ID (you now only get a coding notice mailed automatically if you are on the non standard code).

Presumably an autocorrection of 'their'?  Don't know what a 'tax insurance letter' is though....

Thank you everyone.  So he had an account with the Norwich and Peterborough that they closed when they were taken over with the Yorkshire Building Society and he kept his savings account only.  We have been into the bank and the bank manager had agreed to accept his proof of identity, but was overruled by the people who make up the accounts.  We have phoned, emailed and seen face to face all to no avail.  His tax insurance letter is undated and the tax people have said they never date Thierry letters.  Can I get a joint account with him .?
Can you not just get him a passport and register him to the electoral roll?

Since when is a provisional license not an acceptable form of ID? Was using mine for years as I only bothered passing my test at 31.
Everything on it is enough to verify WHO you are, only that you're not able to drive. It's not like he's applying to be a driver for the bloody bank... Requirements now are getting silly.

Looking at random banks’ websites: Santander won’t accept a provisional ID at all, Lloyds will accept it for proof of address only, Starling will accept it for proof of ID. So there’s at least one bank who will accept it - problem solved. Unless the chap has a CIFAS marker..

Nationwide Building Society accept a provisional driving licence if applying in branch but not by post.  In fact, they also wouldn't accept a full licence by post.
(Obviously one shouldn't be sending it by post and they wouldn't want to be responsible for  it.)

Perhaps @Dyscovery could tell us which banks or building societies have refused to accept the valid provisional driving licence for name or address verification.

In the past (many decades ago) requirements for a provisional licence were less stringent than now and a full (then paper) licence was necessary when needing to prove identity (a less frequent requirement than now).
