After not paying service charges from 2012 as she didn't see what she was getting for £1,800 year.  So ended up with a £20K legal fees bill she never paid.  The management company got a possession order order and had her evicted.  So it does happen

Are you referring to some other discussion? Not sure who was denying it ever happens.

No, I have heard it mentioned on here before but never seen an acutal case quoted before.  Just that it could happen

I bet the freeholder ends up buying the flat on the cheap.

Note that it involves a charging order - so it's being dealt with like any other debt, there's no special landlord/tenant thing going on here as far as I can see.

Talk about cutting off your own nose to spite your face. You bought a flat knowing there were service charges.... What a waste

And was given plenty of time to pay. Harsh though it sounds only one person to blame for that situation.

She’s not exactly lost the flat. She will retain whatever equity is left after her debts are paid.

It’s not like the lease has been forfeited.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • She should have paid the service charge, she knew what it was when she bought the flat.

Yes, I wonder if the OP was confusing this with previous discussions about the nuclear option of lease forfeiture.

More fool her, really.  One doesn't get to live in an exclusive gated block of flats for nothing.
