in Credit cards
I had a Gold Amex card, which was free for a year and worked well, but I don't think I can justify the £140 annual fee. I reverted to a Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card, which gives cashback, but I've realised that they charge heavily for any overseas transactions. These days, with a number of on-line retailers appearing to be UK based, when in fact they're based elsewhere, it can sometimes be a pain to check before purchasing. There's also the slight annoyance that AMEX cards aren't accepted in a large number of places.

I have MBNA, Barclaycard, M&S all of which work well but charge a fee for overseas transactions. My Santander card does not but it's a 123 card which I believe are no longer issued. You're likely to find something similar though if you go on the Cards and Loans page - there's an eligibility checker which may be a good way to start.
I'd be more concerned about having to pay tax, duty and a post office fee for overseas purchases. You really do need to check as these can really add up.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. if you don't need a credit card as duch, chase account gives you good exchange rates and 1% cashback0

Barclaycard Rewards has no foreign loading or per use fee, no annual subscription, 0.25% cashback on all purchases at home or abroad, and doesn't charge interest on cash advances if paid off by the due date. The 0.25% cashback tends to offset the very slightly inferior Visa exchange rate.2

I would also recommend the Barclaycard Rewards. Used it on a couple of holidays now and no complaints.Gerry1 said:Barclaycard Rewards has no foreign loading or per use fee, no annual subscription, 0.25% cashback on all purchases at home or abroad, and doesn't charge interest on cash advances if paid off by the due date. The 0.25% cashback tends to offset the very slightly inferior Visa exchange rate.
Just to add as well, if you don't want a credit card, Starling is a good option when it comes to debit cards.
I tend to use Barclaycard for overseas spending and Starling for overseas ATM withdrawals. Also, one is a Visa and one is a Mastercard which may be helpful if one of them goes down temporarily.1 -
My Debenhams Gold Credit Card - with Payment Protection Insurance is ceasing on 31st October 2021. Does anyone know of any other credit cards that offer the same service? New Day and AXA are not able to assist with my enquiry.

When you say "Payment Protection Insurance", do you actually mean the same PPI that people have been reclaiming in their thousands for the past few years? Or do you mean standard S75 protection?TinkerbellRox said:My Debenhams Gold Credit Card - with Payment Protection Insurance is ceasing on 31st October 2021. PPI wasn't always miss-sold - to be honest, I would suspect at least 50% or more of the complaints about it were try it on from people who knew they had it, signed up willingly and then saw the £££ signs, just like the so called "diesel-gate" complaints going on now. If OP wanted some cover for their products or payments, there is nothing with that.Ebe_Scrooge said:

With my Debenhams card PPI I can claim up to £5k a year back on my card and max of £500 for a single item. I only pay a small interest charge. Any item I see go in the sale in the shop or online I can claim back, with no time limit. Frantically doing all my Christmas shopping now as after it will all be half price and I can claim it back. This ends on 31st October, hence trying to find another card that offers the same.0

Payment Protection is designed to cover your repayment obligations if you lose your job, for instance. It's a bit of a nonsense on credit cards, as you really shouldn't be carrying a balance from month to month - if you are carrying a large balance, you need to take a long hard look at your finances, as you'll be paying a fortune in interest, and this is absolutely not the correct way to use a credit card. Payment Protection is more relevant/potentially useful on a mortgage (as Farfetch says, it wasn't always mis-sold, it does have a useful function for mortgages or longer-term debt). If you mean "Purchase Protection", I think I'm right in saying that this is a kind of insurance product to cover loss or damage to the item with a set period after purchase (as opposed to simply malfunctioning, which should be covered by the standard manufacturer's warranty - and you're further covered by S75 for credit card purchases, for items between £100 and £30,000)If Purchase Protection is what you want, and if you think it's worth it, and you can't find a card that offers it, there are many stand-alone policies that will offer you this cover, that you can buy from many insurance companies.0
