Smart meter no longer displays gas reading - faulty

I've been using a smart meter for a  number of years and regularly passed my meter readings onto my supplier.  The meter was installed by EDF around 5 years ago when I changed supplier.  I changed again to Pure Planet around 3 years ago, however my smart meter stopped displaying my gas reading round about June, only my electric reading.  Pure Planet have now gone bust and I can't take a note of the gas reading to pass to my new supplier - Shell Energy.

I've tried the trouble shooting advice on the EDF website (disconnecting the device and removing the batteries) and I've hung on the phone to speak to someone before being cut off.  My previous gas meter no longer shows any display and the smart meter appears not to be "paired" although my electric meter is (same device).  Any ideas where I go from here?  It is a Geo meter.

Go outside and take a reading directly from the gas meter ?

I think we have a few terminology problems to clear up first, the small display you have in the house is called the 'In-Home Device' or IHD, the smart meter is the part that is often outside the house to which the electricity and gas supplies are directly connected.
If your IHD no longer displays any gas information then you need to go to the meter and see if it is still able to display your current reading. Typically you will have to push a button to activate the display.
If you want to post a photo or two of the meters it may be helpful...
  • Hi - I tried to read my old meter outside yesterday, but the display was blank, like it had been switched off, and I can't access any buttons, as there has been a clear plastic cover put over the display unit, which is not removeable.  Has it just stopped working, and therefore not been reading my gas consumption?

Attached pics if my display unit showing electric is fine, but gas is blank, and meter outside. ached

    Well that is certainly unhelpful.
Maybe someone else with that same meter can confirm if the plastic cover is actually removable as it doesn't make sense to have the buttons inaccessible...

It seems from looking at a YouTube video that the three buttons under the red strip are supposed to be labelled A, B and C, and that the red strip is a flexible plastic strip which will flex when you press the button. Try pressing button A to wake up the meter, and see if the display shows anything.
  • Hi, I tried pressing all the buttons quite firmly, but nothing.  It looks almost like electrical power to it has been cut off.  Which made me think, where does the electric come from to power the meter display?

Inside my front door I have a socket which has 2 plugs beside it - both with cables leading through the wall to outside.  One is for my porch light (which isn't working), but the other must be for the meter!  Both were unplugged!  I've plugged each of them back in, waited a few mins, gone back out and tried pressing all the buttons again, and still nothing.  I wonder if a fuse has blown in the plug?  I'll try to check if I have any spares this afternoon.  They are very old sockets & plugs.  Thanks

  • Hi,
there will be a battery in meter.
  • I actually don't think the meter is plugged into my hall now.  Managed to locate what the other plug is for.  The meter must be hardwired.

Looking on a Scottish Power forum, this seems to be a common problem with these types of meters - but unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet.  It says it's the property of Northern Powergrid, so perhaps I should just contact them to let them know their meter doesn't work.
