Recently been moved to British Gas due to the collapse of People's Energy. Like many others, this is looking like it'll be a significant increase on our monthly bills which I'm quite worried / stressed about being able to afford. Is it best just to sit out the current crisis and hope prices drop, or are we best to try and reject the new BT tariff, or ask BG for a better fixed one?
Sorry for what might be a simple question, is not my area of expertise. Thanks in advance.

The ‘better fixed one’ will be considerably more expensive than the deemed tariff that BG has agreed with Ofgem for People’s Energy customers.2

I have not been invited to sign up for direct debit payments as it states we will be paying by card/cheque. Direct debit wasn’t an option.
I was paying £194 per month with PE and was £477 in credit when they collapsed.
I know the best thing is to sit tight and wait, that’s fine. I also know the prices are a huge increase on my previous tariff. However, I have worked out I’ve used £264 of gas/electric on the new rates in the last 6/7 weeks since PE went under.
I haven’t yet had a bill from BG but found a link online where you could set up a direct debit. It said I could save £38 per annum using this method over cash payment. I started to proceed but stopped in shock when they wanted £335 per month!!!
I’ll wait for a bill thanks. Oh and wear a big jumper etc, whilst waiting for my £477 of credit to appear out of the ether as that would be helpful on the account. I suppose I should call BG, but no doubt they are snowed under at present as their website keeps having technical problems. I will pay as I go for now and wait for the dust to settle.
