To not have scaffolding on your side would probably have resulted in an ugly finish - at which only you'd have to look. Better for you as well as them.

He asked to erect scaffolding in our garden for two weeks to do some work on his property and we stupidly agreed...it took him 3 months and every time I asked him to remove it he was shouting that he will only remove it when work is completed... We were powerlessNo free lunch, and no free laptop0

And then have to pay someone to remove it and get rid of it then have the company who erected it after me for the loss of their property! Easier said than done0

A family member had a neighbour who objected to scaffolding on their property, became abusive and made the prospect of erecting any within a decent time frame impossible. Courts take time to act.So, they built the wall overhand and didn't finish it, because they couldn't.Roll forward 4 years and the neighbour was begging for the wall to be completed properly so they didn't have an eyesore to look at every day.Just saying.2

Not that previous issues with scaffolding have anything to do with the current issue of the extractor fan.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
so, is it though the wall or not? still don't really know the details. but assuming it is through the wall and assuming it is a single storey extension, a possible outcome of this is you can spend money and time making them move it (which I doubt will be straightforward and will result in you falling out about it with your neighbour, even more than you already have) and in the end they will probably re-site it 600mm further up and 300mm further in towards their house on the roof. and I doubt that will make a blind bit of difference regarding the pungent coking smells you're complaining about!

Two reasonable neighbours would discuss this problem and perhaps come to a compromise solution; say to move the outlet further up the roof. This would be in the knowledge that it might not completely solve the problem. There is no way the neighbour should move his cooker, nor would it be reasonable to expect the installation of a commercial type extended chimney if only doing normal cooking activities.Sometimes we just have to live with the annoying habits and preferences of neighbours. Mine like an open fire on which they burn the smelliest coal, so on calmer days with an east wind we just close windows on that side of the house. I'd be glad if they installed a wood burner like us, but it won't happen and they're doing noting illegal. Rather them than somebody with a yappy dog!0
