Speed limit technology

Firstly cannot deny I was speeding. I got zapped at 44 in a 30 and on revisiting the site of the mobile camera I cannot deny it. I'm working away from home and don't know the area too well. So relying on GPS to navigate about.

Where the grievance is, my car - an XC60 - has speed limit recognition tech, works both via a camera and via GPS - told me the speed limit was a 60. I seen the mobile unit, and even slowed down for it (as you do), thinking I was in a 60.

Road in question is just off the A12. Turn off the 60mph A12 onto a B Road, and speed limit immediately changes to 30, and remains 30 for about half a mile until a little village. Where the camera was set up, without seeing the sign at the junction..... Just looks like a standard country B road, no reason to doubt the 60 is wrong as it's farmers fields either side all the way from the A12 to the village - as said about half a mile.

As said, not really looking to get out the ticket as I can't deny it, ultimately the 30 signs are there and that's my responsibility. Just a little frustrating, as I wasn't doing anything wrong as per the info I thought was correct - but I wonder if anyone has any similar stories.

However should I report this issue to Volvo as something clearly failed, on recreating the journey earlier on, the car was still telling me the road is a 60, clearly the vehicles sign recognition cameras miss the signs as you turn off (quite a tight) junction, nor does the GPS recognise it (possible the speed limit has been moved recently?). I've found the system to very reliable in my 3yrs of ownership, hence the having faith in it.

Going the opposite direction, the vehicle recognised the road as a 30.

The "correct" info is always is the signed speed limit, not what your car thinks it is, which could possibly out of date.

I have traffic sign recognition with speed limiter in my car, it can be hit and miss , I treat it as a guide only and stick to the signs for that particular road

As others have put, the technology is a guide at best.

I get that, as said not disputing it's my fault. Ultimately I'm responsible, it's just part of motoring life and driving a job that sees me do 30k a year that sometimes I will get caught out.

I've personally found Volvo's system to be very good. Only way I've noticed it get it wrong is sometimes it reads speed limits from roadworks signs that have been put backwards on the signs on the other lane (as temp works sometimes do).

However if you've missed the sign, the road looks like a 60 and your cars telling you it's a 60..... Well..... It's just frustrating my car gave me the wrong info.

Been caught speeding 3 times in my life, the other 2 were intentional as trying to make ground on the motorway in the small hours. This one feels a bit more innocent. However live and learn.

Negligent rather than intentional... innocent is stretching it too far. Unfortunately many laws look at the events and not the intents (which is typically very hard to prove).

Had the similar system in the Merc and can only remember a handful of times when it got it wrong... didnt know it had it when I bought it so for the first few times wondered why it kept showing me speed limit signs.

Things will be different when fully autonomous vehicles become road legal.

Where’s the car getting it’s mapping data from is there an update process?

Does the road have street lighting? Or repeater signs?

No lighting. There is a single small repeater sign about 100yrds in.

It's a B road, farmland either side. You turn off A12 and it's about 800m to the village.

As said, the signs are there, as soon as you come off the main A road, but.... If you miss them it looks like a 60 road.

I'm not disputing it, I've driven past 2 signs - that's on me......

Vehicle camera reads road signs, and supplimented by GPS maps.... Which should auto update via the inbuilt SIM card.
  • I haven’t had much experience with these systems but the one I have seen (from a “premium” manufacturer) wasn’t particularly reliable either - said the speed limit was 70 on a single carriageway road and then after going through a 50 stretch, it didn’t pick up that it went back to 60 at the other end. In my view, this technology still needs a lot of development and at present, I don’t think I could trust it enough to be useful.
