In between bust suppliers after moving

Options
Hello just a little advice please if you will?

We moved house on 29th September and took photos of the meters when we left. Our gas supplier gave us a closing bill so that was all good.

Electricity was with symbio. I provided them a closing reading but they then went bust a few days later. I received a closing bill from symbio that said -£60.69 but their bills have always been confusing - does that mean they owe me or I owe them? I then had an email from Eon next saying they would be taking over my supply and to await contact so I guess I wait for them to open my account and then let them know I don't live there anymore? Symbio also took an additional DD for £38 on 1st October that wasn't on my closing bill, is that amount protected?

In the new house. On the TA6 form, the owners said they were with People's energy. They are also out of business so again do I wait for a letter from British gas to come? As they wouldn't have set up the old owners accounts before we moved. I can't get through to them on the phone.

It's frustrating as I have no idea how much I'll owe for utilities in this new house as have always been on super cheap fixed deals in the past and obviously don't know how much this house costs to run.

Many thanks

You are in a solid position with Symbio/E.ON. I am ex Symbio, and have supplied E.ON with meter readings. You could provide E.ON with the details they ask for in relation to your old address (readings, meter serial no, Symbio account no.). Then it's the waiting game until they set up an account. That's when you will have to tell them you moved out, and request that any account credit comes back to you, as you don't need an active E.ON account. At the new property you could check online as to which company is your supplier, and when it changes from Peoples to BG you have to persist to contact BG as a newly moved in customer. You have of course got the readings and the photos of the meters from when you moved in. I agree that when you move to a new house you have no idea about its typical fuel consumptions. You build up that knowledge over the first few weeks/months or even up to a year. Just read the meters regularly, and apply all normal energy saving policies. When I moved onto my current house 3 years ago I had to replace 30 50w halogen downlighters with 5w LED bulbs for example! There are no super cheap fixed deals any more. When you do get through to BG make sure you are on the Standard Variable Tariff, which is capped by OFGEM. Any fixed deals will be more expensive.

They owe you £60.69 plus the £38 they've taken on top

Awesome thank you both, I'm usually well on top of the utilities in our house and keep and submit regular meter readings so to have no bills or idea of what the bills might be is a little disconcerting for me!

You can estimate your bills with relative ease since you will be on a capped tariff.

Thanks, good idea then I can make sure I have enough set aside.

Oof is that an indication of the prices right now? I assume I would have to use that formula to convert my gas meter units to kwh?

    Nope.  It's kWh, not kW.

This site (scroll down) will convert a gas volume to kWh.  Ideally you'd need to know the exact Calorific Value, but it doesn't vary much so the answer will be near enough.
  • As an update to this. I managed to set up the account in the new house with British Gas back in October with DD set up so that's all good.

With my Symbio to Eon Next issue, I finally managed to get through to Eon Next yesterday about the credit owed and they have said Symbio will pay me back my credit in the next couple weeks.
