21 or 6a?

We have been issued a 6a notice (6 months). Our tenancy began in April 2012. Should this have been a section 21? Or does it not matter?

6a refers to the form. Section 21 refers to the legislation. Section 21 should be referred to on Form no. 6A.
ETA: Regarding the tenancy start date
If the tenancy was created before 1 October 2015 you do not need to use a special form but you must give at least 2 months’ notice in writing.

Form 6a is a form to comply with the requirements of the Housing Act section 21.But form 6a is optional for tenancies started prior to 2015 (Deregulation Act 2015).
