Advice about curtains

I’m looking at buying curtains ready made with a height of 228cms. The ceiling height is 237 cms, but there is a 10 cms cornice, so that the curtains will come up one or two cms above the bottom of the cornice.

Will this look okay, or rather odd? I usually see curtains stopping well below the ceiling.

Also, I will install a curtain track just below the cornice. Can I find curtain hooks that allow the top of the curtains to be a bit above the rail?

John Lewis pencil pleat curtains, in case that’s relevant.

Thanks for any advice from the assembled team.

Any suggestions on a suitable track, hooks, etc, very gratefully received.

Curtains are supposed to reach as high as possible.  People having a massive gap is just them not being aware of accepted interior design practice.

The 1cm is perfectly fine.  You are never going to be hovering at ceiling height to even examine it, but the tape on the curtain that you attach the hooks too has at least two different height fittings and there is alway curtain above where it hooks on.

If the curtains are coming from
JL they will provide with advice on the appropriate track.  I can't imagine you wanting anything expensive or fancy, so I'm sure the Swish tracks will be perfectly fine for off the shelf curtains.  Even they do a few price points.

Thanks very much. That's really useful.

I see that JL do their own brand aluminium curtain track that looks exactly like the Swish one. That's actually quite luxurious, as the existing track is plastic.

I need a 3.5m length, in one piece, as the curtains are all at stored at one end of the rail, and JL say If you're ordering a track that's 2.5m or more in length it will be supplied in two pieces.

I suppose that a rolled up plastic rail it is, then?

I suspect it will be two pieces with a small piece that slots into both and joins the two invisibly from behind.

My issue is that the front door is at one end of the window. So, we can't have the usual arrangement of two curtains drawn back on either side, as then we couldn't get in through the door.

So, the whole curtain has to be drawn back to the other end. If there's a join in the middle, the curtain runners will tend to catch on that, I fear.

Or, am I over-thinking this? I doubt the join will be very noticeable to look at, but I do want to be able to open and close the curtains easily.

I think you are overthinking.  Just looking at the curtain pole rather than thinking about it will help!  😉

A track is definitely better than a pole for your circumstance and the join should be invisible and not deter the curtain from crossing the centre.  If you explain it to JL, they will immediately find you the right one.

  • If it helps, I recently got Dunelm's 3m bendable aluminium track which has a join in the middle. I thought the hooks might catch but they haven't, and I'm really impressed with it.
