PayPal Fraud-PayPal refusing to help

Daughter had 6 fraudulent transactions on PayPal on one day. 2 were direct bank transfers totalling £1,012 through XOOM and MODULR which she had never used, to a new bank account which has been set up on her PayPal account which appears to be in her name. PayPal are continually saying that these transactions are authorised and therefore not fraudulent . XOOM and MODULR need the full account number to trace where the money has gone but only the last 4 digits show and PayPal said they don’t know it which surely they must if money was transferred there. She has asked PAYPAL for the location and device used for the transactions as this may help prove she didn’t do them.
Incidentally the money has not actually left her own bank account yet as there are insufficient funds in her account so bank has rejected them but PayPal keep trying to take it and have told her she owes then £1012 . Any help would be appreciated

Cancel whatever payment instructions she has with the bank and let PayPal or whatever DCA ends up buying the debt take her to court.

Report it to Action Fraud and give PayPal the reference. It won't do any good but it'll at least show to the court, if it gets that far , that's she's probably not a chancer.

They won't give her the location or device information if she's claiming fraud, it'd be a breach of the Data Protection Act.

I suspect she's going to have to accept she's persona non grata at PayPal going forward.

If someone has set up a bank account in her name. She needs to get a CIFAS protective registration.

  • Paypal have now said they will use a debt collection agency to collect the £1.012 , they are taking no notice of the messages sent to them!

Debt collectors cannot really do much unless it goes to court and a judgement is made against her.

If it goes to court, your daughter will have a chance to put her side of the case and the judge will make a decision based on the evidence.
