Energy supplier when moving into new home

Options
We have just completed on a house and need to register with the energy supplier. Sadly the supplier that the previous owners were using has just gone bust so they were automatically moved to British Gas. I need to talk to someone from there on Monday but when I just got an automatic quote online from them they’re quoting way above the new energy cap…does anyone know what our options are please? They have a £50 exit fee so I’m assuming if we try to switch we’ll be charged that but not sure how it works? Would be grateful for any advice please

  • Take a picture of your meter reading on the date you move in.  Once British Gas get their house in order this will get sorted. To speed up the process, speak to them explaining the situation. You should be put on their deemed tariff which is limited to the Energy Price Cap and will be far cheaper than any fixed tariff they may advise you move to. Do not sign up to a fixed tariff - just ask to remain on their deemed tariff. Review this in April when the Energy Cap will most likely change.

Also, don't forget to supply you final meter reading from your last address to ensure your final bill is correct.

And congrats on your new home!
  • Perfect thank you 😊
