In future just rent the car when you arrive in Spain (or anywhere else).0

That makes no difference. You could only claim for non receipt of the hire car. Company would simply say it was available. Case lost.flyer said:

They could also add customer did not have correct documents.
Chargebacks are card regulations. Legality does not come into play at all.Life in the slow lane1 -
Do you hold a modern UK photocard licence? If you only have an old-style paper licence, then an IDP is required for Spain.
Otherwise, could this be because you failed to obtain in advance a DVLA code in order that they could check your license for any penalty points? Possibly something lost in translation here.
If's not coercion; you had the option to simply walk away, however inconvenient.
Unfortunately, there are a number of Spanish hire companies who operate these kind of dubious tactics, usually flogging overpriced CDW cover.

Which if not taken out tends to see car returned when no one is around to check it for any damage & then hirer gets a nice bill for damage they were not aware of.🤷♂️macman said:Do you hold a modern UK photocard licence? If you only have an old-style paper licence, then an IDP is required for Spain.

The usual trick is to classify chips and dents differently on the booking out and booking in form. That way they can charge multiple customers for the same damage.born_again said:

Hiring a car is fraught with danger.
