Worried Vet Lied

Options
I took my cat to the vets yesterday to have his claws clipped and the new young vet said he couldn't do it as he was too aggressive. He said I had to bring him back in the morning after giving him a sedative (gabapenten 100mg).

I was reluctant as they've never asked for this in 5 years but it does normally take 2 of them as he is aggressive when they do it.

I did as asked and by the time it was to go to the vet I was getting extremely worried as he was so out of it and like a rag doll putting him the carry box to take him. I rushed him in and insisted he be looked at straight away. He got taken in to see the new vet. After a few minutes he came out and went to their medicine room and seemed to be holding an syringe/injection. After 5-10 mins he came and get the nurse to help him clip his claws.
The nurse came out saying he was fine but the dose had to been too strong for him and the vet would be out in a moment. When he came out all he said was just give him half a dose next time and there won't be an issue. I asked if they had given him something else and they both denied it (the nurse was dealing with something else and I don't believe she saw him come out and go to the room).

I knew I was too upset/angry to deal with it then and just wanted to get home with my cat.

I don't want to change vets as one of my other cats has a bit of a complicated medical history and I'm normally happy with the treatment they gave but I have lost complete faith in this vet and I also think I need to make a complaint to make sure the practice knows what happened.

I'm really concerned about if I was lied to about him being given something. If they did I would understand if it was to help but I'm wondering if its because the vet didn't want to get into trouble.

Any advice on if I'm over reacting or what i should say to vet would be much appreciated!

Write to the practice manager saying you are concerned about the treatment given at your recent appointment and ask for full details of what was administered and why.

It could be that the vet injected something to counteract the gabapentin.

You cam also ask that a note be put on your records that you do not want your animals to be treated by that vet in future.

It is important that you have trust in your vet.
  • That would have been really scary and upsetting. How is your cat now?

Cat's are very good at sensing peoples energy. If the new vet was nervous your cat would have sensed it. Something upset your cat that's for sure. Does your cat have any area's that are painful? I ask because one of mine who had a lot of pain in her hips and knees. She was used to having regular blood tests and one ok except the one time. I went to her in the back and got her sitting nice and comfy and then she let them take the blood test.

If you feel confident and can see the blood vessel in each claw you can cut them yourself. You can buy clippers and they are not expensive (last time I looked).

If the vets are covering up, then that's not good at all. Do you know the weight of your cat and the dose you were told to give him? If so you could google and see if the correct dosage was perscribed for him. Or you could phone another vet and ask them. You don't need to ask why you are asking because if you do they are likely to tell you to ask your own vet.

Some animals react differently to drugs too. It could be that even though the dose was right for his weight he might have had a reaction to it. If this is the case your vet should have put that in your case records so that as soon as another vet looks at your cats records it will flash up to alert them. I'd check to see if this has been done.

I agree with sheramber in that you need to have trust in your vet and also to contact the practice manager. Do it in letter or email form so you can keep it and any reples in case you want to take the matter further.

Let us know how you get on and also how your cat is regardless of what you do moving forward.
