Are Barclaycard being deliberately obstructive?

I've had a Barclaycard for a number of years (taken over from EGG).  In the past I've had difficulties paying off more than the minimum payment, however I've never defaulted on making payments.  The account effectively became dormant and I was effectively "paying it down" and due to this, the debt was moved to the "persistent debt" team.  I've since been accepted for a balance transfer offer with MBNA and my calculations see me paying it off "in full" before the end of the 0% runs out, however in order for me to move it I need Barclaycard to issue me a new card.  This is where the problem comes.  Because its with the "persistent debt" team they say they're unwilling to issue me a card.  I understand the need to protect themselves if I were to use the card for spending again, however I've been more than clear on my intentions and my desire to clear the balance and close the account.  I've even suggested they put a time limit on the new card/account and if I've not done what I have advised by the deadline, they cancel the card immediately.  What's worse is that the lady in the persistent debt team suggested I take out a consolidation loan to pay off the balance instead, thus pedalling me an alternative product of theirs!

I've now been passed across to the complaints team, who are doing nothing to abate my already annoyed state and I've called them asking for updates no less than 5 times over the course of 2 weeks (eating into my time limit for completing the balance transfer).  I'm promised call backs and they don't happen, quite frankly fuelling my frustration at the whole situation.  Am I being unreasonable in expecting this, I fail to understand how Barclaycard can keep me on the hook, and indeed paying interest on this account because they won't give me the means to be able to move it?!

  • You can often use old card details, so try that. And failing that, go for a money transfer.

But Barclaycard aren't under any obligation to issue a new card. Lenders are far more inclined to play it safe these days, so they don't get a slap from the FCA.

Rather than asking for a new card (which isnt going to happen) have you tried simply asking them if you can balance transfer to the account in question and ,if so what account no and name to use?
  • Seems to have now been sorted!  It transpires between two providers I've been given incorrect information and after finally speaking to someone with sense, all became clear!
    Thanks for the responses.

Glad you got that sorted out.

What was the correct information? It might help someone with a similar problem...
