Does Barclays own Skipton?

Options
We have an HBOS savings account. We've just opened a new Skipton one, and when I was transferring money from HBOS to Skipton, the sort code came up as Barclays Bank plc in the app.

Does Skipton share a sort code with Barclays, or does Barclays own them? All the searching I've done say they don't own them.

Reason I'm asking is that we already have a maxed out Barclays account (85k each) so couldn't put max money in both.

Just wanted to know before transferring money into it.
It'll be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end....

  • No they do not, Skipton just use Barclays for payment processing I think.

I would check that you've not been scammed as HBOS doesn't provide savings accounts or have any FSCS protection.
  • from their website:

    Important Information

We use Barclays for our banking services. So, when you are receiving or sending payments, the transaction may show up on your records as Barclays.

When setting up Skipton Building Society as a new payee, you may be asked by your provider what type of payee you would like to set up. Please select ‘business’ or ‘large business’ and remember to add your account number as the reference.

Thanks for that. I did look, but couldn't see anything.

My mistake, its a current account we have. They do have FSCS cover, according to their website. (I thought I'd posted this, but it seems to have disappeared)

I think Deleted User means that HBOS was just a holding company that is now defunct, but their banking subsidiary, Bank of Scotland plc, does offer current and savings accounts and has FSCS protection. If you actually have a current account from an entity known as "HBOS" then there is no protection.

OK, thanks. I’m getting to learn that terminology is everything on these forums. It’s with Bank of Scotland, has been for 20+ years. Just trying to shift some inheritance money around, so opened an account with Skipton, then noticed the Barclays (should there be an apostrophe in there somewhere?) sort code. All good now, thanks for the help.

Yes there should, but Barclays don't know where to put it so they leave it out.  😉
