Our 11 year old combi boiler is not holding pressure, I've had the below quote, is this fair or are they thinking I'm desperate enough not to get more quotes?

Install 12L external expansion vessel in the boiler cupboard.

2 seized TRV pins - Replace heads and joints, copper pipes.

......

£550 for the expansion vessel

£720 for the TRV heads and valves.

  • 1. External expansion vessel:
1a. No guarantee that loss of pressure is caused by faulty expansion vessel, unless they have tested and confirmed this is the case.  If so I would expect them to guarantee replacement will cure the fault.
1b. The vessel will be about £70.  Installation shouldn't take more than 2 to 3 hours unless very difficult access.  Three hours at £80 / hour (depends where you are) plus a bit of pipe and some fittings, say £20.  Parts and labour about £330.
    2. Seized TRVs
2a. Even good TRVs (Drayton TRV4s) are around £30, so two = £60.  This will include lock shield valves for the other end of the radiator.  They come with all the "joints" normally needed.  No idea why copper pipe is needed.  Being generous, part cost = £100.  Labour depends on whether they have to drain system down or not.  If yes, then say 2 hours for that (assuming its slow) plus 1.5 hours to change the valves on two radiators.  Maximum = (say) 4 hours.  If draining down, would need to add new inhibitor, say £15.  So £115 for parts and materials, £320 for labour = £435 maximum.
    3. Possibly prices plus VAT, so £920 rather than £1,270 (which might have VAT added).
    4. Get more quotes.
  • Gosh my boiler man fitted a new 12l pressure vessel for £30. I have him £50 as i didn't think he'd charged my enough labour and it was a difficult llocation he had to work in.
  • No fool has spelled it out and been very generous in the time a professional could / should take.

There is the nothing else could be done in that day argument but to be honest it’s £150 of parts retail so he wants a grand plus as his end and likely doesn’t pay retail.

I'm going to assume they know what they are doing and have correctly identified the blown expansion vessel.

Total time around 2 hours, and that's being generous.

Parts and labour from me (in  Central Scotland) £300.00.

Expansion vessel with bracket and a couple of fittings £50 2 TRV;s £30. Total £80.

I will say this, some tradesmen, are very busy and have no time for small jobs like this so they put in silly quotes like this to say go away, if you say yes they they make the time and laugh all the way to the bank.
