I think people can use their own bulbs from year to year provided they started with disease and pest-free stock and have had no issues. I hope so anyway, because I've just done that!

Apparently using your own is a "good idea" because the stock gets acclimatised to your local climate, presumably because if it doesn't suit they die and thrive if it does suit

Grown quite a bit over the years. I will not use the stuff from the supermarket or seed but buy stock from Isle of Wight garlic farm then keep a few from the crop back for next years and top up with fresh seed from the farm to keep a good mix going on. Elephant Garlic is superb. But being clay soil, I use pots and planters with a good peat free mix.2
