Saga Car Insurance - 3 year fixed price - not a good deal really

Last year I purchased car insurance for my wife's Mini from Saga using their 3 year fixed price deal (pay the same every year for 3 years). The reason I did this was to manage costs.  Of course when the renewal arrived, they boldly stated that the premium was reduced for the coming year - reduced!! The premium went from £215.00 to £214.99!! A full 1p reduction!!!!
Given the advice from MSE I decided to take a look at the best prices for insurance using the various comparison sites.   Guess what Confused.com gave a price of £157 from SAGA!!!! For the same insurance!!!! Needless to say I called and my insurance cost me £157 rather than £214.99 - a 25%ish reduction!
So make sure you do your comparisons especially with the changes in January coming up - get on the best price possible now.

As a side point; she has been with Saga Car insurance for a number of years.  EVERY year the renewal price is around 20% (at least) higher than Saga on comparison sites..... this is true for their house and contents insurance as well.    When I call, I tend to get the price on the comparison site.
The GREAT  thing about the law change is that this wont be able to happen as the prices have to be the same irrespective of whether you are a new or old customer (good). BUT Saga (and others) better get their acts together as their renewal rates will plunge as people go to cheaper insurers based on the information from comparison sites.

Moral of the story: if you are with Saga Insurance - check, check, check your renewal costs.

  • I'm in year three of the SAGA fixed price deal and find it competitive in my circumstances.

At renewal in September, I did the comparison with other insurers and SAGA was beaten by LV but as the difference was only a tenner I kept the policy where it is.
