The most important thing is do you have meter readings from when you move in. Is not the first time the previous owner doesnt send any reading and all cost are based on estimations.

OP, are there any outbuildings, garage etc where something is permanently on but not obvious? Like a dehumidifier for instance?

Ask Octopus for the historic annual usage in kWh for both fuels. Then work out what this should cost on SVT. Divide that by 12 and that should be what your DD is set to. Suppliers tend to over-estimate, not surprisingly.

Read the meters once a week for a month or so, to get a feel of the consumption. Submit the readings once a month to Octopus. Typical daily usage for electricity in a house with gas fired heating could be about 12kWh. At this time of year gas consumption might be about 3 cu.m per day increasing to 8 cu.m per day in depths of winter. Set up a spreadsheet to help you. I have a spreadsheet for gas and one for electricity for my consumption since 1983, and have never lost track of what's going on.
