Card transaction limit

Hi all,

Having a frustrating few days, I’ve managed to reach my savings goal to buy a new car, not outright, I’m financing part of it. I’ve found cars I like on two major online retailers sites (Cazoo and Cinch), however my deposit amount is more than £10,000 and Starling Bank won’t allow a one time transaction of more than this, both those retailers don’t accept bank transfers (unless it’s the full amount with Cazoo) nor do they allow multiple card payments (unless it’s Cinch, but this is the reason for my Q).

Reaching out for help with Cazoo they tell me that they have had other customers get a one time transaction to purchase a car for more than the daily card limit of that institution.

Can anyone point me to a bank that does this? So frustrating to be in a position to buy a car and Starling are preventing me from doing so.

Well, for what it's worth, I bought a new car about eight years ago and paid for it with my debit card. The amount involved was about £20,000. I was with First Direct at the time. Before allowing it through, the bank phoned with a security check - i.e., to make sure that it was me. This wasn't unexpected: I'd spoken to them earlier about the large transaction that I'd be doing, and they warned me that they'd want to do this. I don't remember whether they phoned the car dealer and asked to speak to me or called me direct on my mobile.

Thanks Peter, that’s what I was expecting, in fact Starling app sends an alert to my phone, which I go into online banking and approve the payment, it is then declined by them because it’s more than £10k, they are telling me there is no way to do a one time transaction for more than that.

You’re experience and others tells me that some banks must support £10k+ transactions, but I can’t seem to find out who they are.

I paid the balance of our caravan purchase price, around £19k, 3.5 years ago using my Halifax debit card with no issues - I didn't even get a phone call and I hadn't forewarned them I was making a large transaction. This was card present at the dealership though, don't know if that makes a difference.

Thanks mate, I used to be with Halifax  :(
  • Do you have any backup current account with a real bank/Building Society and not a Micky Mouse one like Starling?

Sadly not, may try to open one, I did think about why they impose this restriction, but it all delays cars I'm missing out on.

Ask Chase what their limit is, if any. They pay 1% cashback on many debit card payments, and I reckon a car purchase would qualify for the cashback. Opening an account with them is relatively quick, despite you having to join a waitlist.

Scratch that, car purchases are on the exclusions list  :'(
  • I think Lloyds is 25k/day…. I remember paying off a mortgage across 3 days…
also quite a few banks make you jump through a few hoops on your first larger transactions as a new customer.
Good luck - I feel your pain!

You could try Monzo, they can increase the daily limit for you.
