Courtesy Car, but not third party insurance?

My car has had a breakdown and I've been provided a courtesy car under the extended warranty. The rental company said their car has a collision cover but they haven't covered me for 3rd party. I've just checked with my insurer Darwin and they said that I'm not covered for rentals even for 3rd party. How do I go about insuring this car for 3rd party? I've tried a few online websites, but they aren't accepting rentals. I'm stuck in a funny situation.

That’d odd, no car should be on the road without 3rd party cover. Who is the rental company?

Enterprise. The car is sitting on my drive :)
  • I've just checked with Enterprise. They cover the car and I should cover 3rd party. I was confused with the idea that my insure would be comprehensive for the rental car. I've checked with my insurer now and the certificate does say:

The Policyholder may also drive with the owner's permission a motor car not owned by the Policyholder and not hired or leased to the Policyholder under a hire purchase or annual leasing agreement.

I'm all sorted, thanks for looking.

Have you got 3rd party (damage/injury/death to who you crash into- which is a legal requirement) confused with damage waiver excess (the excess you pay for any damage to the hire car)?

All Enterprise hires have full insurance, but there are spectacular excesses to pay for damage to the hire car, that you can pay extra to reduce when you take the hire. (or buy your own excess insurance.)

Assuming you are correct and the vehicle is being provided without third party cover then your choices are to add it to your existing policy as a Temporary Additional Vehicle or to take out a short term insurance policy on it.

Prior to the Continuous Insurance Enforcement coming into effect it wasnt unknown for courtesy vehicles to be provided without insurance with the intent that they get covered by your own insurance either automatically when its the insurer arranging it or by you adding it as a TAV when it wasnt. How that can still work with CIE would seem painful but with large organisations like Enterprise the pain could be worth the financial savings.

When we used to have a car in for body repairs the insurer did a temporary transfer of the customers car insurance onto the courtesy car - Was a little awkward the day we were called out where several cars ( seven I think) had been struck by the driver of our courtesy car but the insurers paid up. We also got to do some of the repairs.
