This is a really old desktop, with a Pentium 4 (3.2 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM. Plus a 500GB HDD.  It runs Windows XP quite briskly.

I would quite like to repurpose it, so I can give it away. Somebody could use it for basic word processing and web access, provided it had an up to date operating system and anti-virus. Any suggestions for what to put on it?

In the meantime, I notice that I loaded Tiberian Sun and Openarena, so it has its uses ....  (offline, of course.)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I have an old GX 280.( Ex work used for development)
    P4 3.0ghz
1GB( might have put more in I forget nope just the 1)
    160GB HDD
    Radion x300

Used it to try out stuff.

    Took a Windows 10 install

    Put Linux mint on it

Just worked also runs off the USB stick

Really sluggish now sits in a corner till I decide what to do with it.
(Probably scrap got way to much old kit eg gx50)

That gx620 should be better might be worth trying to find some extra cheap/free memory.

  • Anything on the hard drive you would rather someone not get hold of?
  • Well 15yrs old it ain't going to be like a ferrari , but put in two x 2gb memory sticks or 2x1GB and mint will be fine.  It should run on the 1GB it has too try a USB mint live and see how it goes. Libreoffice for docs etc Firefox(my choice) or chromium or Edge(yes really)

I think the issue with my GX280 is it gets memory bound with 1GB if you try too do too much or browse(Firefox)
A lot of web pages gobble memory.

Unbelievable they were decent development machine in their day.
