I've got a new laptop for my dad, the old one fails to start and it had a copy of Office 2016. If I want to get a copy on to the new laptop is there a way to retrieve the product key from the old hard drive?

  • You can phone Microsoft and tell them that you have got a new laptop and you want to transfer Office 2016 on to that. They will ony do that if you will no longer be using it on your dads old laptop. They might ask you delete it first, but don't do anything until you have spoken to them.

If you bought it through Microsoft you'll have an account that will have it stored  - sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/services/?refd=support.microsoft.com

You mean the old one wont boot? This happened with my old pc but I'm taking about 6 years ago now. I was told I needed to uninstall office from my old pc, then phone back and they would give me a product key. When I explained I couldn't they were ok with that. Just give them a call and see what they say.
