As a failed Green energy customer I've switched to e-on next, during the process I was asked if I was interested in a smart meter, I declined. Now one day after the switch was confirmed and my first DD payment taken I received a text telling me that on this tariff I have to have one threatening me with a more expensive tariff if I don't. Has anyone else had this issue? I would be inclined to tell them to get stuffed and switch elsewhere but I'm a bit concerned as to what will happen to the £130 credit that I have with Green.

Edit: Green's SoLR were Shell (link) so I assume you chose to switch to E.ON Next? Which tariff are you on? It's quite possiblr you chose a smart meter only tariff.

    Thanks for the swift response.
The default one, I was offered Next 2 year ordinary V6
Looks to me they publish terms and conditions that covers all their tariffs without any information as to whether each one is conditional on having a smart meter or not

    See for example here:https://www.eonnext.com/policies/terms-and-conditions

Terms for our fixed term tariffs

    11.1 About these tariffs
11.1.1 Some tariffs are only available if you pay by Direct Debit and manage your account online. This will be confirmed when you agree your contract and also confirmed in your welcome letter.
11.1.2 You agree to the installation of a Smart Meter, where eligible. You still qualify for this tariff if you already have a smart meter installed or it’s not currently possible to install a smart meter at your property.
11.1.3 If your tariff has an end date, we might charge you a fee, known as an exit fee, if you switch more than six weeks before that date. Your welcome letter will tell you about this.

That's nicely tucked at the back of the T's & C's, I'll let it ride for a while and I think there might not be room for one what do you think? As you can see there's a lot going on in that box!

To be fair to EON, they do make it very clear on the website that you need to take a smart meter.
I certainly found it very obvious, when I switched from Green.
That said, there is a big difference between a contractual term, and actually being able to enforce that contractual term, as thousands of consumers find out to their dismay each day.
Like you, I also intend to simply ignore their requests, in the expectation that push won't come to shove, at least not anytime soon.

That is quite a busy space :D
I suspect you'll fall under the " it’s not currently possible to install a smart meter" exemption, but (depending on what questions they ask) you might still need to let them send an installer over to discover this.

Yes very busy, PV runs, then runs in and out for battery back up, eco eye monitor, and the huge contactor isolation switch.
I've been trying to find a picture of the meter e-on are installing so I can send them a picture to say it's not possible to fit one in, not much luck yet, anyone got a picture?
Had a wicked thought, make the appointment say a couple of months in advance and the day before tell them I've failed a lateral flow test!
Also I would need written confirmation that if their engineer were to cause any damage or disruption to the set up they pay for the repair any damage caused.

Good plan B, but plan A should be to just not make an appointment.
Only go to Plan B when they write to you saying "we will switch you onto a more expensive tariff if you do not book an appointment by".

    https://selectra.co.uk/energy/providers/eon/smart-meter  Says they fit/have fitted
EDMI ES-10A , ES-10B and ES-12B (Google will find pictures as well as EDMI's data factsheets with dimensions)
    and
L+G E470-672 SMETS2 smart meters  (Google will find OVO forums with good info)
(I assume they're unlikely to have any old SMETS1 even with newer firmware in to fit)

Having meter hopefully NOT fitted this Thursday, will report back. I will be making it very clear any damage or loss of facilities will result in legal action.
