Gmail notifications on Chromebook

On my laptop, I use Thunderbird for email, and whatever I'm doing on the internet, I get a little box come up to tell me whenever an email comes in.
How can I set up my wife's Chromebook so that she gets notified if an email comes in while she's browsing? She only uses Gmail on it.
