Puncture or Alloy Rim?

I've had a 'slow puncture' for a few weeks but how can I tell if it is a puncture or the alloy rim that is causing the air to leak out?
I'm pretty sure the tyre place would tell me it's the most expensive out of the two!

Why would they. They are there to sell tyres so if it was the rim it would be a bit self defeating for them given that you'd be back within days complaining that the leak is still there. Most tyre places I've been to have been very thorough in diagnosing the fault, but then again I don't go to places like Kwikfit and the like.

If you want to find out for yourself then take the wheel off and closely examine it for nails etc and submerge it in water.
  • Go ask them.
Had my regular tyre shop have a look at mine after they fitted some new tyres (a few months after fitting). They popped the wheel off, tested and all was OK, removed the tyre and pointed out the issue with the wheel coating coming off around the rim. Buttoned it back up FOC. Now I keep an electric pump to top it all up or its a wheel refurb for 4 alloys.

I use the good local places, trick is finding them.

Perhaps use a leak detector liquid like Snoop to show where the bubbles come from.  Or, trust the professionals (and save the price of a bottle of Snoop)

Had the same problem ,when the tyre was due to be replaced the tyre company removed the old tyre ,wire brushed the rim and painted on some black gunk ,fitted new tyre ,job done ,i am sure for a modest fee they will clean your rim and refit your tyre.

I just wanted to update since I have had my tired sorted.  The tyre was fine (no puncture) and the tyre garage did exactly what Ganga described above (but refitted my original tyre) and it cost me just £15.

    Thanks again everyone!
