Double Oven Cost
Hey, has anybody got an idea on how much it should cost to run a double electric oven?
Just moved into a new rental and they have a large double Smeg Oven.
Using the smart meter, using the thing jumps it up lots!
I read about 15p an hour is normal although I think this things goes up to about 40p an hour. I'm wondering if this is normal or if there's a fault with the oven.
Thanks

The only way it will be using more energy than it should be is if the thermostat is broken, but you'd spot that straight away because it would be burning everything to a crisp.1 -
Cooking is a big energy guzzler do you have to have both ovens on at once ?0

You can allways use a small air fryer if you don’t need a big oven on0

It will have a heating element that will be rated at several kW, so 40p/hour sounds exactly right. However, the next time you use it keep an eye on the smart meter - you will see that after it has got up to temperature it will either switch off or massively reduce its consumption, after which it will increase/decrease as required to maintain whatever tempreature you select. Its average consumption should be substantially less than 40p/hour, depending on what temperature you select and how often you open the door.1

Ours (Not a Smeg) has a fan option. The fan oven is cheaper than the top oven and the main oven on non fan usage. The toaster is cheaper than the grill option in the top oven.
The manufacturers guide should list which ones use what power on what settings.0 -
Most ovens are rated at around 1.8-2.0kw, so if you have both ovens on then you will peak at around 4kw HOWEVER each oven will only be heating at full power when it's heating from cold up to it's working temperature and then the thermostat will control it and most of the time you'll only use one or the other, not both at the same time
Our fan over takes around 5 minutes to get up to temp whereas the smaller non fan one takes around ten.
Ten minutes at 2kw = about 0.33kwh at 20p/kwh = approx 6p. When the thermostat kicks in the consumption then drops to around 50% so realislically if you are cooking summat for one hour, you'd use 0.33kwh in the first ten minutes and then another 0.833kwh in 50 minutes - total around 1.25kwh at 20p = 25p Cooking a turkey for around four hours is likely to cost less tha £1.00
It may be a bit less or a bit more depending on how high you set the temp and how often you open the door but learn how to use your smart meter IHD rather than getting panicked over instantaneous peak readings.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -

It depends on, how hot you are running the oven and how long for, are you allowing it to warm up first etc.
The most expensive period of running an oven is when it is heating up, the element and internal parts have to get from room temperature to 150-220c, this requires a lot of energy. During this phase it will draw the maximum allowable, so if it is 2kW then it will draw at or close to 2kW. Once the oven is up to temperature the power draw will drop considerably, at which point it might draw only a few hundred watts to a kW to maintain the internal temperature (although more each time you open the door, as there is a temperature drop). Any heat lost from the oven is lost into the house, heating the house, so in winter this is not an outright loss.
40p an hour is possible and for a double oven with both in use not excessive, does not sound like a fault.0 -
Does anyone else want to state exactly the same in slightly different words?

Less hot, cost less.
