The 500Gb form ebuyer looks the way to go.

Question is, (and maybe a daft one too) but, my present drive is 80GB and almost full, so will cloning with Acronis give me 420Gb available as free space ?

Also, will my XP sp2 recognise the size (500GB) of my new drive and can the entire cloning process be done via USB2 using an external enclosure ?

In answer to the first question: yes, you'll have roughly 420GB free once you take into consideration that formatting the new drive will reduce its capacity (but it's trivial really). However, see below.

Will your new system recognise it? That's an unknown, since we don't know what your motherboard is. The hardware controls things such as drive capacity. You'll need to check with your mobo manfacturer. If it doesn't support up to 500GB, then check to see if a BIOS update will enable larger drives.

The entire cloning process can occur via a USB2 external enclosure

If I buy and connect the 500GB drive via USB external enclosure and the PC recognises it, is it fair to say, the same is true when it's a clone and installed internally (IDE) ?
