Hi all,
Hoping someone is good with these. I have a 2001 Clio and it has a fault light I've been clearing for years related to a starting problem. I can't get the OBD2 adapter to talk to the ECU for Torque to work now and wanted to check the protocol and if I may have damaged an important pin maybe or something?

Pin 14 looks a bit mangled- which is the CANbus low.

Have you done the usual fix of insulating the wires that have been cut into by the edge of the rattling metal cover on the engine ecu located on the back of the engine?

This is the usual cause of the eml getting set on a clio of that age.

Thanks facade, I'll check. It's the electrical coil light that's stuck on all the time and has been since before I bought the car in 2013, the previous owner just kept clearing it and I've been doing it with the Torque app on my phone. I've changed the suspect sensors, the previous owner changed the glow plugs and I also checked relays on the passenger side of the engine bay. It's a 1.5dCi by the way, I considered other models that have that same engine as well (K9K I think?) for other ideas. My local Renault specialist changed a sensor last time and believed it would sort it and didn't. One fault report came back saying it was the air conditioning but it doesn't have that. It was becoming expensive to try and resolve so just clear the fault light and it starts ok.

Ah, it is the petrol engine that has the problem with the ecu.

I'm surprised a 2001 diesel works with OBD, they didn't have to be until around 2004.

Yep, that'd be my suspicion, too.

I have a 2002 PSA 2.0 HDi, which doesn't do EOBD. It has a physically identical socket, but is proprietary diagnostics...

It worked fine until by battery died from standing during lockdown, I think the bluetooth adapter may not have helped much with that. I hoped replacing the battery and disconnecting the ECU might have reset it as I thought it could have been a voltage issue or the ECU was playing up. I'm considering getting a wired diagnostic reader to see if it might be the two adapters that are faulty as they're ebay ones which can be a bit hit and miss I think. I liked their low profile as I could have the lighter socket back in place on top.
I'm getting an ODB2 extension cable (thin ribbon one) instead so that I can plug in to a diagnostic reader without having to remove the lighter socket and won't have a bluetooth adapter permanently drawing on the battery.
I think it might be KWP2000 protocol possibly?
