Bills keep going up and up - changing to pay as you go metre

Why on earth would you want to go prepayment? It's more expensive, AND you have to pay for all your energy up front. I hope I'm never ever saddled with a prepayment again!
You must have been using a lot more energy than you're think you are for you to be £800 in debit right now. But you can have a look to see what's costing so much and probably contact your supplier to set up a payment plan to get that debt off gradually.
If you just switch to prepayment without even trying to find the root of the problem, you'd still be using that much energy and you'd still rack up another £800 of use (more now that the prices have gone up!), but you wouldn't get the option of a payment plan if you go over again. You'd have to have the credit on your meter at the time of use, or it's quite literally lights out.
And you say you have a smart meter, "so you're told". Have... have you never looked? Have you never checked? Have you never logged into your online account to see how much you're using? You've never been sent a bill? I don't understand how you can just set something like this up and then never look at it again to check it's going how you expect. I get emails from my provider every month with my bill and how much my account is in credit/debit by. There's been no contact to you from your supplier or vice-versa at all for three years?
When you set up the account, did you just go by the estimate (usually it says things like how many bedrooms, how many people live there, etc, and make an estimate off that which is usually very inaccurate) and not what you actually use?
By my maths you should really have been paying around £90-ish a month at least, not £65. If you've just been paying £65 for 3 years, then it makes total sense that you've racked up a large amount of debt.1
