We are trying to disassemble a relatively modern two seat sofa for disposal - trying to save an £75 collection charge from our "bin men"
The thing is put together with, literally thousands of staples, screws and multiple layers of ticking, foam and other pieces of material - then there's the glue - an extremely strong, not quite fully set, semi rubber type (:?) - so far we have spent a full day and are only 1/4 done and are only just exposing the wooden frame !!
Any suggestions for a way forwards - short of paying the £75 ?
Please dont suggest a bonfire (toxic foam)

Are you trying to get the staples out and separate every thing properly?
We literally just cut fabric/foam off the frame with a Stanley knife, and smashed it up just enough to fit in our car to take to the tip.The tip staff were fine with it. Is that an option?
£75!! Expensive council!!!1 -

do you have a sledge hammer. I have a 16lb one in the shed. when I wanted to take an old divan bed down the tip, it came in very handy.0

They collect it for £75

So are you trying to dismantle it carefully or can you just smash it?0 -
Sharp knife, saw and a hammer are the only things ever used when breaking down sofas.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.1

Hi,why take it apart staple by staple if it's going to the tip, are you intending to recycle the staples?0

Break it up enough to fit into the back of your council trash truck. Give the bin men an early Xmas present £7.50 each +
and your sofa.
bin men are actually very nice approachable people, Respect to our bin men. No respect to office based managers blahhChoose Stabila !0 -
My Husband recently did ours and the 3 seater, he cut the fabric leaving the staples, might have used some brute strength to dismantle the frame, (was still in good nick after 18 years) and took a couple of hours. Fabric has mostly been set aside to reuse, foam went to the tip, wood is set to go on the fire pit in the gardenMake £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

I took a DFS sofa apart by using a Stanley knife to cut the leather off the frame and a saw to cut through the wooden 2x2 sections. It took a couple of hours including tip runs and was a useful exercise in how poorly made their sofas are.0

I disposed of a couple of old divan beds. Most of it went to the dump, in bits.
I kept the bed springs and made a sculpture out of them.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
