Forgetting the moral side of the issue, have you considered moving to another bank using the switching system and making £100 or more in the process?

I suggested that in the 4th reply to the thread, which the OP has clearly read as they thanked it, so I'd guess the answer is yes.

A had a Natwest student account for 3 years or so after graduation.  I stopped using it and had an angry collections person phone me up and ask for immediate repayment of the entire overdraft! I told him to do one, but I repaid the overdraft monthly over a year and haven't darkened their doorstep again.

Not really too sure why you felt you could just tell the bank “to do one” after them exercising their right to ask for full and immediate repayment for the amount you owed to them. An overdraft facility is given on the basis that it is repayable on demand.

Sounds like you got it sorted out though.

I didn't have an objection per se, it was just the most aggressive phone call I'd ever received. No security process or anything like that, I wasn't even sure if it was a scam. I phoned them back myself and spoke to someone more pleasant and set up a payment plan then.
