Free early termination?

So let's say I am in a middle of my contract, but I want to cancel it. Obviously, early termination fee will apply. However, instead of cancelling the old contract, I sign a new, upgraded one with the same provider, and effectively, the old one get cancelled automatically. A new contract always comes with a cooling-off period, so I cancel it within that period penalty-free. Effectively, I got the new one and the old one cancelled penalty free.
Is that a realistic plan, or is there a catch?

Comments

  • Nope, if you cancel within 14 days on the new contract you'll revert back to the old one not cancel the services completely
  • That would be the obvious outcome, but I remember once getting a new contract and not being happy with it, so I asked them to cancel it and put me back on the old one, but they said it wasn't possible as the old one had been cancelled and couldn't be restored.

I think with telecoms contracts, the cooling off period finishes once the service is up and running - so your proposal wouldn't work because there won't have been any interruptions in service ??

Maybe one should put more effort into finding a decent contract /deal in the first place rather than trying to find loopholes in existing ones.
