Learner Driver Insurance.

I am finding this difficult to get my head around how to sort this out....

We have a spare car which is SORN.Not taxed or insured. I own the car in my name. I just kept the car when I got a new one last year because I knew it was ok (Fiesta), and I couldn't face buying a second hand car having been been stung so many times before.

My daughter has just got her provisional license and is starting to learn to drive.

How do we insure her on this car.

Option1 - I insure myself on this car as a second car for me. Then she gets learner driver insurance in her name.

Option 2 - She gets learner driver insurance with me as a name driver. (I dont think this is allowed)

Option 3 - She insures herself on the car as a learner driver with me named. This has to be an annual policy

Once she has passed I will transfer ownership to her.

You need to be careful on what you buy as there are those that are full policies but marketed to learners potentially with some special features like accelerated NCD or they are just short term policies but you also get top up policies which require the vehicle to have its own insurance on it.

So option 2 is an option if its a full policy style offering but not if its a top up type.

Its somewhat swings and roundabouts as a "learner policy" terminates once they pass even if it has time left to run where as a normal policy you can just declare passing, pay the additional premium (learner drivers are much cheaper than just passed drivers) and finish off the year to get her 1 years NCD but a company thats cheap for learners isnt necessarily cheap for inexperienced drivers.
  • I would suggest that a policy is taken out in your daughter's name with you as a named driver.  I did exactly this for my son last year.  She can get a year's NCB after 10 months.  There are long waits for driving tests so it could easily take 6 months or more to get one.

The cheapest deal I could find was with Collingwood at about £350 for the year.  Significantly cheaper than any other I could find.  There terms for cancellation etc. are more punitive this year but I think they all are, tbh.  Find them here:

    Good luck!
  • Hi,
interesting comments and advice, thank you.  My Son is 17 imminently.  We have a Fiesta that we're intending he will have once he passes his test.  Meanwhile practicing with his Mum and I whilst he has professional lessons.  Trying to pick through the minefield of alternative ways for achieving this is a nightmare, so I'm grateful for the suggestion of Collingwood as a 'starter for 10'.
We're currently insured with Direct Line (for this and 2 other cars), who are only interested in us making an application and have not been helpful in giving advice meanwhile.  Those policies are up in May, so time for change perhaps.
If anyone has experience of a solution to a similar situation, I'd be very appreciative of you sharing.
    Many thanks everyone :-)
