Just Moved House

We have just bought our first home and moved in at the weekend. Should we just wait to hear from the existing supplier and let them put us on a standard tariff? Thanks

Record and photograph your meters, contact the existing supplier, set up an account and give them the meter readings, then you’re free to switch to a supplier of your choice.

    welcome to the forum.

You will automatically placed on a legally binding 'deemed contract' with the existing supplier; which should be on the SVT (Standard Variable Tariff) Don't let them put you on a fixed tariff until you have assessed what is the best option.

However you need to contact them with your meter readings if you haven't already done so.

Find out who supplies the property:

It'll probably be a dual fuel tariff so you can do it in one call.  If not, two calls, no major hassle.

Find the meters (could be anywhere - usual places are outside walls, under the stairs or in some cupboard somewhere) and read them. Phone the supplier up and say Hello, I've just moved into 17 Cherry Tree Lane, can I have a new account please, here are my opening meter readings - Gas is <whatever> and Electricity is <whatever>.

I hope you told the supplier at your old address at 221B Baker Street you were moving out and closed the account there.

Your standard tariff will be the default, in previous times it would have cost the earth to boil the kettle on these but as it turns out it's probably doing you a favour.
