As prices are increasing and government wants to phase out gas boilers should I be swapping my faulty old gas boiler for gas or electric one?

I wouldn't, noting that electricity prices are still five times higher per kWh.

Electric boilers are probably the most expensiive that anyone has yet invented to heat a house - they use peak rate electricity and even in these troubled times peak rate leccy costs 4-5 times more per kw than gas.

Even a superduper heatpump will cost twice as much as mains gas to heat your home.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Disappointing responses from people who have a very nasty shock coming.  Gas will not be cheap for ever.  One day it won't exist.  Yes right now the artificial imbalance between cost per kWh makes gas many times cheaper, but the writing is on the wall. When gas and electric prices reach parity, what would the respondents say then?

    Might be true.

    Not true.

Until that day happens then gas all the way?

It's all very well to say use electric, but it is currently considerably higher than gas cost-wise. Unless you have a bottomless wallet and a desire to want to quintuple your costs out of choice, nobody would select electric out of choice for heating and hot water.

I don't understand the obsession to electrify everything.

If you were in the areas which had electricity supply problems (that we've seen recently due to the weather) you'd be stuck. No electricity to heat your stove or home, or to charge your electric car with.

If everyone got a purely electric car overnight, I'm sure the network would struggle to cope with everyone plugging in at the same time and juicing up.

Most of our electricity current comes from CCGT power stations so why not just cut out the middle man? Don't really understand your passive aggressive post.
