Inflexible package holidays

Why can't travel firms be more flexible with flights on package deals it might encourage more to travel . I've tried to delay a return flight post cruise to visit relatives has proved impossible

It somewhat depends on the operators involved but generally they pre-buy a load of capacity to get cheaper prices... they have say 200 spaces on the cruise and a corresponding 200 seats on the plane. If you want to fly home a different date they then sell only 199 seats on that plane but still have to pay for the 200 they booked plus then have to spend more on your 1 seat on a plane they have no prebookings for.

There are many ways to deal with the issue though... buy flights and cruise separately but then its your risk if there is an issue with the flight etc or if you look at higher end options there tends to be more flexibility on what can be booked but you will pay a premium for that. Or ultimately be a no show for the return flight and buy your own one way ticket to return on.
  • When you say "package deals" - do you mean as offered by TUI or Jet2  who operate their own airlines ?

Have you spoken to the tour operator or are you trying to do everything on line?  You may have more success if you visit an independant travel agent and see what they can put together for you. They aren't tied just to the flights from one airline.
