When to cancel utilities

Options
We are about to exchange (Hopefully this Friday or following Monday) and I do not know when and how to start cancelling water, gas, electricity, council tax, internet....
Am I missing something?
Thanks.

For gas/elec/water give meter readings the day you move out and close the accounts then.
Your internet contract may contain a notice period but don't do anything until you exchange.
You can notify the council once you exchange, just give them the dates you'll be moving.

You don't 'cancel' any of them, you just give notice and request a final billing from the moving date. None of the services are physically turned off, except possible your landline.
Any readings given prior to that will be erroneous.
CT account balance can be transferred to the new property if you are moving within the same LA area.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Assuming you don't want any of them to be cut off before you stop using them, and given that you'll need final meter readings whenever you do actually move out, "not yet" is the answer.

Internet we did 2 weeks ago. The date we move (cut off) and they arranged the book in date for the new address.
  • Thanks, I will try as soon as we exchange
  • When I moved out I did everything smoothly. ( or so I thought )
Of course I got post redirected .

A few weeks down the line BT sent me a threatening letter , threatening me with debt collectors . 2nd and final demand for payment . The first letter was never received. All for £38 something

    Then Richmond council charged me
a small amount for council tax

Not just a rant , but a reminder that whatever you do there is always something..
