My wife (who uses a different surgery to myself) does not have a named GP - Her surgery has only 2 full time GP's and a constantly changing stream of stand-ins / locum GPs for 5,500 patients - the surgery was in "special measures until recently
I thought that every NHS patient was entitled to a named GP ?

  • Has she asked the surgery why she doesn't have a named GP?

I am in Scotland so it may be slightly different, but we simply have the name of the 'head' GP as our named GP. We can request to see a specific GP but this isn't necessarily our named GP. It could be something similar if they only have two full time GP's?

We have a named GP in theory, but just see who ever is available.

Never saw the point in a named GP.

I tend the choose the one who on their bio has an interest in whatever I am going to see them about. No point in seeing someone who is not interested in the subject.
  • It is down to "responsibility" - everyone is entitled to a named GP who is then responsible for their health

I've no idea which GP is now my named GP because there have been so many changes at the surgery.
I never saw the GP who was officially my named GP because I didn't like the man.
I didn't think the aim was continuity of care but a way of spreading the patients around the GPs because of how they were paid - maybe that's not the case?

I vaguely remmber that it is age related something like over 70 is required to have a named GP?

in practice it makes no diffrence

Are you sure she actually doesn't have one, rather than hasn't been told/the notification went astray?  But naming one won't stop the stream of locums etc.
