Black Skirting Boards

The previous owner of our home had the skirting boards painted black and we are now getting round to making them white again.
Does anybody have experience of painting skirting boards from black to white and know if this will require sanding etc and how many coats of paint?
Does anyone know the rough cost per room if we were to get a painter in to do the job, or might it be cheaper just to replace them rather than paint them?
Thanks

Just give them a light sand and paint as normal. It might take an extra coat or two.
Replacement is a bit drastic if they are in good nick. The cost of extra coats isn't going to be more than the cost of replacement.2 -
Something like Zinsser BIN will help in covering the black and keeping it covered.1

I think white primers/undercoats will obliterate better than top coats, certainly when it comes to water-based paints, so - after a light 'keying' sanding to get the black surface smooth - I'd be tempted to use a water-based primer/undercoat first, and see how that goes in covering the black. It should be easy to apply, and then give you an ideal surface for the top coats.(I used Dulux Satinwood (solvent-free, brill white) to paint pre-primed doors and skirtings, which turned out to have less than brilliant white primer on them. It took three (thin) coats to get a brill white finish... :-( I shudder to think of what it would have been like trying to paint over black...)0

Ah, Zinn BIN is also white - that's probably a good call, then :-)

ThanksNormally yes, with supply issues an the moment maybe. An yes really then normally cost a lot less than a decent tin of paint, and you can always just live with the primer ;-)0 -
