Combi Boiler Replacement

I have a Combi Boiler (Ideal Independent C30, 11 y.o.) that has been recurringly losing pressure. After replacing an expansion vessel, a heating engineer thinks it is a faulty condensation unit (after isolating the heating circuit, we found water dripping from the condensation valve), apparently a common issue with these boilers. Wondering now if a) I should just replace the condensation unit (£300), b) replace the boiler (££?) or c) wait a few years and go for some alternative heating system, if gas boilers are being replaced?

I'm guessing that the 'condensation unit' is the main heat exchanger? That's the water jacket that the burner heats up, and where flue gases 'condense' out.And the evidence for this was that water (system water) was dripping out from the condensate pipe even with the boiler not running - fair do's.I'm surprised at how cheap the MainX is - around £100. It looks like a cast iron jobbie? In which case £300 all in isn't criminal - it's probably one of the bigger jobs on a boiler, and he may be swapping associated other bits too.Hard to know what to suggest! At 11 years, it's 'getting on', but not ancient. What are the chances of other significant parts failing over the next, ooh, 5 years? I'd say - if they have not yet been replaced - then pretty high; higher than not. The 'Hydroblocs', for example, the diverter valve, the pump itself. Even the PCB. Each one will cost a similar amount to sort (which is why it might in future be worth looking at fixed-price repairs). But, your boiler could also just keep on chugging for 5+ years more with no issues. How much will a new boiler cost? I'd guess around £1.5k to over £2k depending on make.Looking longer term, if you think that you will be seriously considering alternative heatings systems within, say, 5 years (and, if so, best start doing your research), then I think in your shoes I'd try and minimise cost now - so have the boiler repaired. When it finally goes 'kaput', then use that as your opportunity to change energy systems. BUT, I cannot think of an affordable alternative at the moment! If, instead, you are thinking that "I want to keep to a gas combi for as long as I possibly can", then it might be sensible to put that £300 towards a new one - many come with 10 year warranties. It's a toughie. See what other folk say. Ultimately, it's going to be your call - I doubt there's a perfect answer out there (but would be delighted to be proved wrong).1

There was history of internal heat exchanger leaks on early ideal gas boilers
The heatexchanger can be exchanged it comes as a kit, not cheap around £400 plus an hour labour £100+
Or a new ideal independent. Its an entry level boiler and priced accordingly.Choose Stabila !1 -
Thank you so much to both of you. Very considerate responses! Will have to reflect a bit more. And yes, I meant the main heat exchanger - forgot the actual name.
At the last boiler service, the guy said the boiler 'looked ok', for whatever that's worth. On the other hand, my home emergency cover is offering £500 towards a new boiler (as deemed by them to be beyond economic repair).1 -
What are some trustworthy boiler brands by the way?0

As long as it's on a normal fitting price, and not an artificially inflated one. What actual figures are they suggesting for a newie?1 -
That contribution, can you get it in cash ? and spend it on your own choice of installer or gas boiler.
If you can, its a very generous contribution. could even get your own boiler repaired
New boiler fitter around £2k have a look at boxt

The insurance won't offer cash, or a boiler (recommendation). They're asking me to source it and submit invoice.
Out of curiosity, I just noticed that when I am drawing hot water for a shower (upstairs), some of my downstairs radiators are getting warm, even though the heating is actually switched off. Never noticed this before! What's going on here?0 -
Could be a faulty divertor valve1
